A black-and-white photograph of Donald Buell and Betty Binch and Betty's dog, Buddy. The photograph was taken outdoors and features the two figures standing in front of a stone wall with a door visible on the right and a post visible on the left. Betty is holding the dog in her arms.
History
Donald Buell was the son of William Senkler Buell and Sophie Buell (nee Bowie). His paternal great-grandfather, William Buell, was one of the early settlers of Brockville. His maternal grandfather was Robert Bowie, owner of the Brockville brewing company Bowie & Co. In December 1914, when Donald was nine years of age he traveled overseas with his mother and sisters to be with his father. When WWI began William S. Buell was the officer commanding the 41st Regiment. He left Brockville in August of 1914 and after training at Valcartier, he went overseas as Senior Major of the 4th Battalion, which he accompanied to the firing line in February, 1915. Donald and his mother and sisters stayed at multiple residences in the English countryside during this time.
